SEDATION DENTISTRY

Is there anything in our lives more miraculous and amazing than the glow of an expecting mother? Pregnancy brings so many wonderful blessings to the lives of not only the mother, but her extended family and friends as well. A healthy pregnancy depends on many factors and oral health is a critical component to keeping mom to be and her child balanced and ready for the big day.
The hormonal changes that occur both during and after pregnancy can have a dramatic effect on the mother’s oral health. The bacteria associated with poor oral health have been connected to preterm births and low birth weight in newborns. Even when mothers are diligent about their oral care, her gums and oral tissues can be more susceptible to problems that can cause inflammation, and affect her diet and nutrition.

PREGNANCY & ORAL HEALTH FOR EXPECTING MOTHERS
By Dr. Dana Nichols
Many developmental problems with your childs teeth can occur long before they lose their first incisor. Most of these are mild and require little more than observation. Dr. Nichols does recommend careful consultation with your Pediatrician to identify any issues both before they get their first tooth and shortly there after. If a problem is noticed in a child before the age of 6 or beyond if your child has special needs, a Pediatric Dentist is best equipped to manage those issues.
In the absence of a problem, Advanced Dental Concepts begins seeing kids at about 6 years of age. At that age they are better able to follow directions and help us get them through short and easy appointments. If your child has a short attention span or a lot of apprehension, then a specialist may be the best answer. Remember try not to tell them too much before their appointment and never make fun by playfully scaring them or allow older siblings to do the same. Even good intentions can create a management problem for their dentist.

Oral cancer is 1 of only 3 cancers increasing in incidence in this country? Someone dies every hour from oral cancer, it is responsible for more cancer deaths than skin and cervical cancer combined.
Certain foods we eat my seem good for you, but can cause serious damage to your teeth. Personally, popcorn and sports drinks are at the top of the list in my practice.
